Best Jobs Internships 2009
Recently the New York Times ran a story about “University of Dreams,” a company that places students in jobs internships for eight weeks over the summer, in exchange for about $8,000! Despite this hefty price tag and the fact that these internships are unpaid, students express gratitude at having the opportunity to work with a company like NBC, Ford Modeling Agency or Nike. Yet students don’t need to settle for these types of arrangements, reports Business Week, who publishes a “Top 50″ list of internships available.
Topping many lists of premium jobs internships is PriceWaterhouseCoopers. In 2009, this mega-employer had more than 2,800 intern positions and stated that they “place enormous importance” on their internship programs because “interns represent a significant source of talent” for the firm. Interns work with mentors, attend workshops, perform practice exercises and try their hand at numerous accounting tasks. Following the $23.80/hour internship opportunity, 88% of interns were offered a job and 87% of them accepted.
Similarly, New York City accounting firm KPMG hired more than 1,800 paid interns who earned $22/hour at their jobs internships. According to their website, “KPMG’s intern training program is the only one among the Big Four to offer joint training for audit, tax, and advisory interns.” Interns will work closely in auditing, tax, advisory services and public accounting. Their website puts a tremendous focus on students, which shows just how much they value this program. Following the summer internship, 95% of interns were offered a position and 87% were more than happy to accept.
Other top companies that offer jobs internships include General Electric ($19/hour), IBM ($21/hour), Merrill Lynch ($14/hour), Lockheed Martin ($17.21/hour), Verizon ($17/hour), Nike ($15/hour), Boeing ($17/hour), the Central Intelligence Agency ($16.99/hour), General Mills ($20.48/hour), St Jude Medical ($20/hour) and L’Oreal USA ($16/hour). Ernst & Young (accounting), Grant Thornton (accounting), KPMG (accounting), Protiviti (consulting), Accenture (consulting), Raytheon (manufacturing) and Bearingpoint (consulting) have some of the highest rates for offering entry level jobs following the internship opportunities, with over 90% of their interns being asked. Some of the highest acceptance rates can be found by satisfied interns at Norfolk Southern, the CIA, the US Patent & Trademark, the Marriott, St Jude Medical, Metlife and Northrup Grumann.
