A covert group of assassins has the Vice President of the United States in their sights. They’ve planned well. There’s just one thing they didn’t plan on: Jack Reacher. What better way to test the security surrounding a U.S. vice president-elect than to hire someone skilled in the killing arts to penetrate his protection? Assassination strategy, though, is only part of the assignment facing Jack Reacher in Without Fail. This restive, blunt-edged ex-military cop must also determine whether recent threats against VP-to-be Senator Brook Armstrong are legitimate or are primarily intended to embarrass the perfectionist head of Armstrong’s new Secret Service detail, M.E. Froelich, who happens to have been a girlfriend of Reacher’s late brother.
If Without Fail lacks the emotional urgency of Lee Child’s previous novel, Echo Burning, it still barely lets the reader catch a decent breath between plot crests. Jack and his fetching yet formidable colleague, Frances Neagley, must figure out how warning letters to Armstrong are being delivered into the Secret Service sanctum, whether the senator is at risk because of something political or personal, and who staged the demonstration murders of two innocent men also named Armstrong, first initial B. Unfortunately, a few twists (including the source of a thumbprint applied to the threats against Armstrong) can be figured out in advance, and the story is light on character development. A tiny breach in Reacher’s reclusive carapace opens as Froelich transfers the love she once felt for his brother toward him, and there are suggestions that Neagley may have depths of feeling just waiting to be plumbed. However, other players are mere ciphers–the sacrificial victims of an action-oriented yarn. –J. Kingston Pierce

It kept me up all night. I love Child, and especially the Reacher books.
Have written 3 emails to Adams Bookstore regarding “non-receipt” of this gift book sent to a family member. Have heard back from Amazon each time informing me they received my email to Adams Bookstore BUT have never heard back from the bookstore (Adams) that was suppose to ship the book. Therefore, I purchased the book from another bookstore and had it shipped to the recipient even though my credit card has been charged for the book and paid to Amazon. I would like a refund and Adams removed from your supplier for lack of response. Mrs. Wallace L. Maurer, faithful purchaser from Amazon.
If you love the Jack Reacher series, just fricking buy this book already! It’s awesome. If you DON’T know Jack, then get to know him, because you will love him!
“Jack Reacher” is a blunt force–solid, sexy, smart. He gets in, gets it done, then gets out within days. You’ll be on the edge of your seat every time you read one of these books!
Lee Child is not a literary genius–but he is an amazing story-teller. I am a writer’s writer and I usually stick to biographies and fiction by Auster and the like. I like intellectual stimulation. I don’t like sentences beginning with “And”. Also, I’m American, so reading about an American character who lives in the USA but says that people are “called” (an obviously British reference, which Child is) instead of “named” (whatever their name is) bugged me at first. I pushed past it because the stories are so riveting. What an escape these books are! Lee Child won’t make you laugh, but he’ll give you a case of perma-grin, and you’ll learn all sorts of wickedly cool factual information about reconn, artillery and hand to hand combat. You’ll feel like an insider with an edge–as if you could do it all yourself. Hey–I’m a house wife in my 40s and I feel like I could command a 4 a.m. mission myself! (Use the element of surprise and shoot the weakest guy last–and make my glock a 19 because I’m smaller)
I love Jack Reacher!
