Picking Out Mothers Day Flowers

The first time Mother’s Day was celebrated was June 2, 1872. A suffragette named Julia Ward Howe founded “Mother’s Day For Peace.” The point of the event was originally pretty close to the chant of “Give Peace a Chance” taken up a century later. In this instance, “Mother” represented both the person who gave birth, and the feelings of comfort and joy associated with that person. The day kept these multiple meanings for several decades. After the turn of the century, it became closer to the event we recognize today.

Ann Reeves Jarvis was another woman who made significant contributions to society through organizing women to improve conditions in their communities. Her daughter Anna campaigned for a national holiday honoring mothers after she passed away. Woodrow Wilson approved the holiday in 1914, and since then has been celebrated annually every second Sunday of May.

By 1923 Jarvis had begun to protest the manner in which Mothers Day was being celebrated. The result of to her desire to sentimentalize motherhood was the start of the gift giving that is now associated with Mothers Day. People started to send flowers and cards to their mothers. Jarvis spent the rest of her life fighting against the commercialization of the holiday. Ironically, she never had any children and she spent the end of her life in a sanitarium, surrounded each year by Mothers Day gifts, flowers, and cards.

In this diverse world of today, many people live too far away to easily visit Mom. Numerous people celebrate Mother’s Day by honoring Mom with cards, flowers, or plants. Buying Mother’s Day flowers with special meaning is a common reason for selections along with choosing the blooms mom loves best.

Jarvis did not intend the holiday to take on so much unintended significance. Although the day is not celebrated as she had initially intended, her goal of creating a holiday based around honoring mothers was still accomplished. Unfortunately, Jarvis will never realize this.

Another woman Ann Reeves Jarvis also gave substantial contribution for improving the condition of women. After her death her daughter worked towards making the Mother’s Day a national holiday. It is celebrated on every second Sunday of May. Children give Mothers Day Gifts to their mother. Those residing far away from their mother send Mothers Day Flowers and cards. Many send flowers that their mother likes. It is nice way to honor your mother.
