When should I change my toddler from sleeping in a crib to a toddler bed?

My son will be 2 in January and for his birthday I would like to get him a toddler bed and change his room into a big boy room. I’m not sure at what age it is good to do this. I would also like to know the best way to go about the conversion and how to get him comfortable in his new room. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Once your child is tall enough or talented enough to climb out of there own crib its time for the bed.

my daughter’s crib converted to a "toddler bed" (one side of the crib is modified to have an opening in the middle and shorter rails at the corners). Shes been in it since 10 mos and never fell out. She is 16 months now and will climb in by herself and get out by herself. I quickly learned to just turn off the lights and shut the door. I hear my daughter playing sometimes and other times she will get out and bang on the door and cry but after she realizes its really bed time she gets in her bed and goes to sleep.

As long as your son isn’t a wild sleeper and will not roll out of the bed I don’t see why you cant switch him now. The best way may be to keep the old bed in his room and put the new bed in there too. start putting him in the new bed for naps then tell him its time for night time too. If you think he may be ready then try to get him excited about it by just talking to him about it, taking him shopping for the bed and new room stuff then have him "help" you set up the new bed and take out the old one. as long as you make it sound exciting he will love it. have a new bed party or something, lol.

    You could probably start now.

Cribs are designed for infants up to 4 years, and as such as excellent for keeping kids safe at night – they can wander between 2-3 years. By 4 he needs to be out, and there are weight limits that should be in the pamphlets that came with it, but really most parents have found their toddler climbing out and that’s the usual age for the transition.

As long as he does not climb out or get to big you can keep the child in the crib

My sister second child was climbing out of the crib before 18 months
Her third child, never climb out, and she was in the crib until after she was three

My child did not climb out, but got to big between 2 and 2 1/2 years old

I would not buy a Toddler bed, they use he mattress crib, and very small. I would go into a twin or a full size bed
A full size bed is better, because it gives you room to lay down with him if you need to(read a boy, a bad dream, sick, etc)
Also, when he is a teenager, the full size bed can still be used, if you get a classic one. If he is tall, he will have more room to sleep.
You will need to change the mattress of course, but keep the bed

My child has a full size bed
She is nine, I can tell you, there are times, I have to still lay down with her. I could not do that with a twin

Toddler beds are not really worth the money

I would maybe look into a twin bed shape like a car, if I was going to do that. No a toddler size

hello they recomend your child be 90cm tall but really its there own maturity you can get rails aswell to make your boy feel safer or if your sons cot is low to the ground i would take one rail of for a couple of days and then let him help yous make the bed etc and explain that this is his new bed also keep his cot blanket for him to snuggle up to and keep his room safe so when he gets up by himself he cant hurt himself i was planing on putting my son in a toddler bed at 2 but we have decided to wait until 2 and a half to 3 as we r expecting another bub goodluck though he will be so excited =)

    There is no perfect age.

If he cannot escape from his cot, and his weight is within the cot guidelines then he can stay in his cot until he is too big for it, around age 3 or 4. If it is a convenience issue and you would like to move him out because a new baby will need it, or if you just want to change over to a toddler bed, then do it slowly. Over a week is a good time. Day naps in the toddler bed, night in his cot. After 2 naps in the toddler bed then try to put him in the toddler bed for day 3 nap and over night sleep. If he handles it well leave him there, but if you find he is frightened or if he doesn’t like it put him back in is cot for a week and try again.

Put a baby gate at his door! That way if he gets out of his new bed he can’t trash your house, or get into things he shouldn’t be touching. I’m moving my daughter into a bed when she is 2 (november) I moved my first born into a bed at 2 also.

A 2yo should be old enough to get out of a crib and into a toddler bed. A couple of guests stated that a child can be in a crib until 4 but I personally would not leave them in a crib that long. As far as introducing the toddler bed to your son, take him with you to the store and let him see some of the beds, see how he reacts to them. Some children like the secure feeling a crib provides. If he seems uneasy wait a few months and try again.

Both my boys were in a toddler bed before they were 2 years old. They didn’t want to sleep in the crib anymore so we put up the toddler beds and they loved it.
